Mastering VMware vSphere 4 by Scott Lowe

At VMworld 2009 in San Francisco I received a copy of Scott Lowe’s book “Mastering VMware vSphere 4” and really did have the intention to read it as soon as I got home, but it turned out it took me quite a bit longer before I finally started reading, but today I finally finished it.

Although I do know my stuff around vSphere, I did learn a number of new things by reading Scott’s book. I like the style in which it is written, it varies from a starter level to deep technical level, but never gets too basic that makes you skip pages or too difficult to lose you in the deep technical pieces.

“Mastering VMware vSphere 4” isn’t the kind of study book that just tells you what every button in the interface does, it shows how you build your virtual infrastructure and explains how you can use all the features offered in vSphere. When you’ve finished the book you not only have a clear understanding of all the features but also know how to use them in your infrastructure.

In the appendixes there is also a lot of good info, like appendix B with all frequently used commands with examples and appendix C shows a long list of VMware vSphere best practices with a referral to the chapter in which the theory behind these practices is explained.

Think the message is clear: “Buy the book!!!”

  5. I've just finished reading Scott's book as part of my preperation for my VCP-410 exam, which I passed comfortably incidently!

    However I am also planning a major move of my employers VMware estate to vSphere 4 and there are some really good pieces of advice in there that you wouldn't get from reading the product documentation. Real world examples, which of course is the world we live in!
